Athlete of the month —– Kristin Muchmore

Name: Kristin Muchmore
Age: 44
Job: Bookkeeper. My husband and I were both born at the old hospital downtown. We’ve been married 17 years and have a 12 year old daughter.
  1. What are your favorite Physical activities other than training at Undisputed and how has training with us improved them?

My marathon time has improved.  Ha!  What I’ve really been helped with is just life.  I do cartwheels and handstands with my daughter.  I squat down to get something off the floor rather then just bending over.  I haven’t hurt my back moving big rocks in the backyard and that use to be a regular occurrence.

     2.  What is your why for your fitness or your who and how do you bring this intent with you to undisputed?

Going to undisputed is one of the highlights of my day.  My job is pretty mundane so I look forward to checking the WOD each night and seeing what I have to look forward to.  The fitness aspect of it is just a by-product.  Pretty much every week I’ve done something that I never thought I could do.  That’s a nice feeling and why I keep coming back even when something looks scary.

     3. Explain the what and why of something that you love about yourself.

I’ll tackle just about anything.  I’m a total introvert but I successfully sold cars for a year.  I’ve replaced toilets, the innards of my computer and a washing machine pump.  Oh, and flipped tires.  Thanks Strongman!

    4. If you had the chance to do your top three bucket list items what would they be?

Charter a live-aboard dive boat to take family and friends wherever we want.

See the northern lights.

Live in London for a year.

    5. What is one unexpected benefit that you have received from this community?

Being so excited at someone else’s achievement.  There were handstand walks the other day.  It was really exhilarating seeing everyone from firefighters to grandma giving it a go.  I walked out of that class with such a smile on my face.

    6. What is  something about you we don’t know?
I was a scuba instructor in Hawaii and I’ve done over 500 dives around the world.

  1. What are your favorite Physical activities other than training at Undisputed and how has training with us improved them?

I’ve been doing Nia for quite a few years. I’d always found it challenging but now I can’t remember the last time I got winded during class. I think my coordination and overall physical awareness have improved as well – which I notice both inside and outside of class.

     2.  What is your why for your fitness or your who and how do you bring this intent with you to undisputed?

In the 2015 “Fittest on Earth” documentary, Mat Fraser said that when he works out, he knows he did at least one thing that day to make himself better. That statement resonated with me so much that it has become my own personal ‘why’ and it’s what started me down the path of investigating CrossFit and ultimately joining the gym

.

I approach every class with the intention of challenging my limits in one way or another. Like a lot of people I’m a bit of a perfectionist, so I also remind myself occasionally that I can only be where I am and work from there. If I know I gave everything I had during a workout, I’m happy.

After almost a full year at Undisputed, I can honestly say that I’m more fit now than at any other point in my life. I want to be able to say that again next year, and the year after that, for as long as humanly possible.

     3. Explain the what and why of something that you love about yourself.

All of my close friends have one thing in common – they all say what they mean. No pretense. No drama. No games. I would say the same thing about myself. What you see is what you get.

    4. If you had the chance to do your top three bucket list items what would they be?

1 – Spend a month cycling through France (a dream of mine for nearly 40 years now)

2 – Vacation in Bora Bora doing as little as possible every day

3 – Visit Italy and look up my relatives there

    5. What is one unexpected benefit that you have received from this community?

I absolutely did not expect to draw so much inspiration from the community. There are a few athletes at the gym that I would categorize as ridiculously fit. Some part of me will always aspire to that level – attainable or not. But there are also folks who are just starting out and of course everyone in between. I find myself inspired by all of them – especially by those who seem to be having the hardest time of it (which, ironically, is often me).

Coming to the gym is a choice. Nowhere is it written that life requires burpees. But we all show up and do them, as best we can, and then come back the next day to do more. I think that’s meaningful. I think it says something fundamental about human drive and potential, and about what’s possible for all of us, not just in the realm of fitness but everywhere in life.

    6. What is  something about you we don’t know?

Okay, here’s an essentially useless piece of information very few people know about me. I know how to count cards – as in Blackjack. I also know how to handicap horse races. I taught myself both skills in my early twenties, mainly just to see if it could really be done. I had some mild success at the casinos, tremendous success at the track, then quickly realized that I am not a gambler. Go figure. Have not placed a serious bet since (poker with friends not withstanding).

  1. What are your favorite Physical activities other than training at Undisputed and how has training with us improved them?

Lifting weights at local wellness center or at home, outdoorsy activities such as hiking or going for walks and bike rides with my kids or watching them in their own sports or physical activities. Working out with undisputed has humbled me and helped me work on my technique, so when I’m really feeling tired at the end of the day and just want to rest I go to undisputed where resting is not an option ha ha so that keeps me healthy and fit to do everything else that I enjoy.

  1.  What is your why for your fitness or your who and how do you bring this intent with you to undisputed?

Fitness has always been really important to me because not only does it help keep me mentally and physically healthy but I also want to be a good role model for my kids. I encourage and push them to be active and healthy so I have to be active and healthy also. So I come in to undisputed with the intent that I am not going to waste this experience I want to learn what I can so I can utilize it in my every day life.

  1. Explain the what and why of something that you love about yourself.

I am very stubborn which is sometimes a bad thing but it is also something that has made me push my limits physically and mentally to get me to the next level. It may not be the most attractive or easiest transition ha ha but it’s the one that’s most worth it when you feel like you are doing just a little better than yesterday.

  1. If you had the chance to do your top three bucket list items what would they be?

I did the tough mudder like two years ago that was on my bucket list at one point,

But I like things that challenge me physically and mentally so in that same realm My next goal was to do the Great Wall of china marathon.. but I’m not much of a runner these days so we will see. I think that would be awesome. Also on my bucket list is to get better at really using my body weight in my workout routines, lol would that be a bucket list item? I don’t know but it’s in mine…. thirdly but maybe first on my list I have been wanting to take my kids on a vacation out of the country maybe like to Toronto, lol barely out, baby steps.. it can be a Great Wall of china kind of goal….. I’ll have a bigger goal next time.

  1. What is one unexpected benefit that you have received from this community?

A new sense of community, I came in dis-attached just wanting a new place to work out, instead I felt welcomed and I found myself really wanting to connect with this community. 🙂

  1. What is  something about you we don’t know?

All of the above. Lol
